Sacred Vessel

Raku-fired Stoneware

7" diameter x 4" deep
2004

Miller Private Collection

Sacred Vessel is from a series that was developed while working with pre-school children. Clay was shaped by hand over a plaster form and stamped to create the outer motif. After the base was added and the completed piece was fired once, the rapid Raku firing followed. Finished in an ancient eastern traditional style, the base was left unglazed to absorb the smoke stained coloration from the fire, while the reduction of the outer glaze developed copper highlights and circular inner glaze tracking. Raku remains highly revered as a prominent form of contemporary artifacts.
